Red Bull: Behind the Track

I conceptualised and produced a video series for Red Bull Music South Africa that explored the stories behind some of the local scene’s biggest underground hits, featuring artists like Jakinda and Dunn Kidda.
Behind the Track: Jakinda - Jiva Pantsula
Stiff Pap producer Jakinda is a Cape Town-based conceptual artist originally from Johannesburg whose work is an exploration of afro-futurism, black masculinity and a spiritual journey of self-discovery.
Combining a mixture of kwaito, house, hip hop and gqom, Cape Town duo Stiff Pap broke onto the scene last year with their single ‘Dlala’. With a futuristic sound and full of party energy, their music is unique and still gets the dance floor going. Watch now to find out the story behind their track 'Jiva Pantsula' from their debut EP 'Based on Qho Story'.
Watch the Stiff Pap producer tell the story of how the track went from being slow and experimental to a more uptempo future kwaito sound.

Behind the track: Dunn Kidda - Laanie Levels
Dunn Kidda produced ‘Laanie Level’ as an interlude for his first Red Bull Studios Cape Town EP, ‘The Space’ EP, but it turned out to be the track that got the most attention.
Experimenting with a future-kwaito sound that was inspired by Okmalumkoolkat & Riky Rick’s ‘Amantombazane’ but not as dark, this production sees Dunn Kidda experimenting with softer sounds and ambient effects. Watch to find out how he shares the story of the track and how it came to define his style as a producer.
Get the lowdown on his future-kwaito beat.
